Looking for a great thing to do with kids in the Portland area?
Go to Mackworth Island! This a great way to spend a couple of hours. It is five minutes outside of Portland but you will feel like you are miles away from the real world. It is a perfect little getaway for people of all ages.
Mackworth Island is accessed by a causeway from the mainland in Falmouth. It is roughly 100 acres with a beautiful 1 mile walking trail surrounding the perimeter. The island is home to the Baxter School for the Deaf and was originally donated to the State of Maine by former Governor Percival Baxter. The views of Portland and the islands of Casco Bay are magnificent. There are several benches and spots where you can climb down to the water’s edge to skip rocks or put your feet in the water.
Mackworth Island is also home to a secret fairy house village. For years, visitors have been collecting natural treasures as they walk and building their own fairy houses. There are hundreds of them on the island. It is really quite magical.
